Starting a motorcycle with the stand down is a seriously dangerous condition. Safety regulations therefore require that the vehicle not be allowed to start if the stand is down, hence the need to fit this element with a sensor. It follows that a malfunction of the position sensor can cause the engine to shut down suddenly while riding.
An unreliable stand position sensor led the client to ask Intea for a device that would drastically increase the safety and reliability standards of its vehicle. A leap in design quality was needed to safeguard the rider.
Intea's winning proposal was a redundant sensor with differentiated signals, using a single input into the pre-existing control unit and encoding the signal on three frequencies. The position of the stand is thus unequivocally monitored, as is any malfunction other than the up or down position. A remarkable incremental step both towards the company's compliance with automotive regulations and towards technological miniaturization as a crucial factor for “intelligent” locomotion.
